Self-Care for Creatives

Adele Leung

The role of a creative in the industry is often recognized for our speed, flexibility, agility, persistence and resiliance. We are demanded and expected to work long hours, with a lot of changes, stress on the body and incessant drive. We survive on stimulation and no true nourishment of foods. The industry is upheld by harsh critique-never do we hold each other with appreciation, but we nit pick, critique and condemn with what we don't like, judgement is strife but made to be absolutely normal.

We only have time for work. Most creatives work as freelancers, so knowing when the next job would be is crucial. We only care about when the next job would be, and our body is is the first thing that we leave behind, because only the recognition, status and money that comes with our jobs is the most important!

Most of us never have the space to realize that actually self-care is NOT a luxury in our work, but a prerequisite. Self-care in all aspects build a solid foundation for our work to flourish. It sets the respect and authority that is necessary, so the abuse and critique rampant does not touch or knock us down. Most of us do not know what that even means, because we are so needy for the next job (nothing wrong with that as life is not free) that all abuse is no problem, we cannot care less that it is there. But not caring for ourselves, we cannot care about the abuse around would only keep the industry abusive and keep us working in the industry having to brave this (we can all feel it, but whether we disregard what we feel is another thing) every single day. If abuse is seen as normal, suppressing each other whilst we work, will always be considered normal.

How about if we as creatives, we start the conversation of self caring for ourselves? How would that not only change our work and business but for our bodies to keep working? So we do not then blame work or old age in making the body break down or being obese or too underweight, too exhausted or feeling too heavy and cannot fulfil what work needs us to do. Would we then truly enjoy working and not see it as an escape, or a need for recognition, or the means for survival? How would our lives then become?

These are all super grand questions to ask ourselves. If you are a creative, have you ever wondered how long you can survive in the industry, whether there is a supportive way to not be as exhausted, or honest enough to acknowledge that how we work has crushed our body? Join us on this workshop to know we do not work alone, get to know others in the industry that are facing similar situations like ourselves. Learn ways to not compromise on our authority of working, they are absolutely crucial working behind the scenes, so what is in front of the scenes-your jobs, how busy your schedule is, the quality of work you produce gets upgraded as well.
